Founded in 1999 by master teacher John Miles, the Micha-el Institute provides Waldorf-inspired teacher training certificates, preparation and education for both current and prospective teachers. Taught by the Compton-Burnett sisters, who were taught directly by Rudolf Steiner himself, John developed a Waldorf-inspired teacher training curriculum for the Micha-el Institute that has since equipped a generation of teachers to work inspirationally around the world.

This is an ideal introduction to Anthroposophy and Micha-elic, Waldorf-inspired education for all adults who wish that they could have had a Waldorf education in their childhood and youth. It is especially helpful for parents who have or wish to have their children in a Waldorf program or for those planning to becoming Waldorf teachers, as this course will explore the full backdrop of the approach.
Becoming a class or subject teacher is a process that requires intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual development. Individuals who seek this path must be prepared for rigorous study in all aspects of education including handwork, music, eurythmy, language, and the general pedagogical trajectory proposed by Rudolf Steiner. Through engaging class discussions, self-reflection, and written and visual curriculum work, individuals will develop a deep understanding of the principles behind one of the largest growing fields of education.

The Early Childhood Teaching Certificate prepares individuals to act as lead teachers in a early childhood classroom. Individuals pursuing this certificate will learn to integrate the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of child development into a classroom environment. The importance of imagination, play, nature, and wellness will be studied deeply providing a strong foundation for lead early childhood teachers.

Why Choose the Micha-el Institute?

The Micha-el Insitute supports Rudolf Steiner's indications by offering a comprehensive Micha-elic curriculum that not only provides knowledge of child development, Anthroposophy, and grade school subjects, but also helps students develop self-knowledge. Steiner said what is fundamentally important is who a teacher is, not what a teacher knows. The Micha-el Institute helps each teacher-training student develop the self-knowledge to find their own individuality and deepen their understanding of humanity. This self-knowledge enlivens in us an instinctive understanding of the children we encounter and engage with that Rudolf Steiner called ‘pedagogical intuition,’ which is invaluable for all Waldorf school teachers.

Where you choose to do your Waldorf-inspired teacher training is largely a question of destiny or karma. Our founder, John Miles, was personally trained for ten years by Juliette and Vera Compton-Burnett, whom Steiner gave the task of bringing eurythmy and speech formation to the English-speaking world. In addition to developing the institute’s Micha-el Curriculum, John has over 30 books in print for Waldorf teachers and schools, covering anthroposophy, pedagogy, geometry, music, poems, plays, and more.
